Montclair U12 Bulldogs capture the 2007 Cedar Grove Summer League Championship

On July 25, the U12 Bulldogs defeated the #2 team, Caldwell, to win the Cedar Grove Summer League Championship in a best of 3 series.  The Bulldogs, ranked #5 our of 12 teams, beat Fairfield, (#4) and North Caldwell (#1) as they made their way to the final showdown against Caldwell.  The first game, played in Caldwell, resulted in a 6-6 tie after 9 innings.  The next night, at Kaveny Field, the game continued and the Bulldogs won, 9-6 in 10 innings.  The second game, which started right after, was a tough contest. Caldwell had bases loaded in the 7th, with the score 4-1, Montclair.  They scored one run to make it 4-2 before the Bulldogs made the final 2 outs.  For all the boys, Garland Thornton , head coach and Alan Berman and Rich Nordstrom,  assistant coaches, it was a terrific end to the season.

The U-10 Bulldogs won the Montville spring championship by beating Fairfield in the final 12-6. The team went 11-1 over the Spring season.

Bulldogs 12-U Win the Mt. Olive Memorial Day Tournament 50/70

The Bulldogs came to play and won all 6 games in the Mt. Olive tournament, highlighted by a 6-4 victory against the host, Mt. Olive Red, in the finals.

Starting on Friday, the Bulldogs beat Flemington 11-4. They faced Long Valley Saturday morning and pulled out a last-inning 9-8 victory, after being down 6 to 1. Will Wynn pitched a shutout 6th inning and then delivered the game-winning-hit in the bottom of the sixth. On Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs played an errorless game with homeruns by Chris Vincent and Sam Ackerman to win 7-2 against Mt. Olive Gold.

The single-elimination part of the tournament started on Sunday with the Bulldogs beating Mendham in a close 7 to 6 game. Julian Lee and Brett Cooper helped the offense with homeruns, and, again, the defense played errorless ball. The afternoon game had the Dogs get behind early against Long Valley, but homeruns by Brett Cooper and Eli Kashi helped put the Bulldogs back on top. Keith Harrison and Brandon Taylor pitched 4 shutout innings to preserve a 6-5 victory.

The final game against Mt. Olive Red was a thriller. Brett Cooper hit his 3rd homerun of the tournament to get things going in the 1st inning. Julian Lee threw 3 shutout innings to start the game, while the Dogs built a 5 to 0 lead. But Mt. Olive started chipping away in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings. With tying runs on base, and the winning run at the plate, there was one out in the 6th when Max Barnes came on in relief and secured the last two outs with clutch pitching to secure the 6-4 victory, giving the Bulldogs the Championship!

The boys have really come together as a team with every player making multiple contributions, pitching, fielding, and hitting.

Great job Dawgs!
-Coach Andy-

On Saturday, April 14th, Woodman Field at Montclair High School was officially rededicated after a year long renovation. Yogi Berra, a long-time Montclair resident, was on hand to cut the ribbon and throw out the first pitch.  Always smiling and energetic, Yogi clearly enjoyed being in the spotlight as the elder statesman of  Montclair Baseball.  Pictured here with members of the 2007 travel teams and coaches, Yogi graciously spoke and shook hands with many of the over 300 people in attendance .  It was a terrific afternoon!
